The Harbour And Marina
The ruins of the historic
San Ventura castle still stand at the harbour in Caleta. It was
built in 1743 by a military engineer Claudio de Lisne to ward
off pirates and is a familiar sight to visitors. The castle has
been restored and is floodlit in the evening and makes for a beautiful
back drop for lazy warm nights.
Caleta de Fuste, or El Castillo as it is affectionately known
by the locals due to the old fort that stands on the sea front
is the centre point of the resort. Near the harbour there is an
area that has been set aside solely for water sports. Here at
the Dive centre you can indulge in everything from Jet Ski to
wind surfing to scuba diving and paragliding, all levels of skills
are catered for. For the novice windsurfer, there are special
taster sessions and if you have never been scuba diving before,
you can even sign up for lessons in that. With years of experience
in the Atlantic Ocean this is the most popular dive centre in
Fuerteventura. PADI, CMAS and IAHD (International association
of handicapped divers) courses are all available.
Around the harbour area you can relax with a drink, enjoy a meal
and watch the world going by. The 18th century watchtower and
castle overlook the colorful marina from where you can watch the
fish being fed in the crystal clear waters or take various boat
trips. You can ride in a glass bottomed boat or go swimming with
dolphins or whale watching on the luxury catamaran. And if you
don't see a dolphin, you can return free the next day. There is
also a floating oceanarium with a couple of sea lions that put
on a free public performance. This old fishing port is still used
by the local fleet and is a great place to fish. Caleta de fuste
has a very long coastline and an abundance of fish around its
shores. This makes it an ideal place for angling, whether it‘s
for a serious attempt to catch a whopper or just to relax for
a few hours. You can take a boat trip to go deep sea fishing or
it is possible to catch a whole host of species including Tuna,
Parrot Fish, Variety of Snappers, Mullet, Garfish, Needle Fish,
Blue Fish, Bonito Tuna, Barracuda, Wahoo & Sting Rays all
from the coastline around the harbour. For all your fishing requirements
there is a British run tackle shop in town.
